Kyrie 4
Nike designer Ben Nethongkome, alongside Nike Basketball Design Director Leo Chang, set out to create a shoe that could translate Kyrie Irving’s lightning-fast footwork and unique style onto the court.
Groundbreaking Design
“Kyrie uses the entire court and constantly changes direction,” says Ben. The design team’s main goal was to keep him balanced. They introduced a bold approach by splitting the outsole, allowing the shoe to provide multi-angle support. “Now Kyrie can hold his foot at a 45-degree angle as he shifts direction and prepares for his next explosive move.”
Maintain Speed Through Turns
For Kyrie, speed fuels his game and ultimately his ability to score. Inspired by the way a tire grips when a car takes a turn, the team engineered a rounded outsole to maintain momentum during sharp cuts. “We want him to stay fast while turning,” Ben explains. Instead of losing energy, the shoe transfers it into the next movement—ensuring Kyrie harnesses every ounce of his power.
